Happy Halloween! I had grand plans for this year's costumes. Until about Wednesday, when Gavin suddenly decided he wanted to be a Jack-O-Lantern. One that looks like this:

So off I went to look for a pumpkin costume for him. All I could find was a size 12 - 18 month costume. But I knew it would fit around his head and arms, so I bought it and hoped for the best. I have to say, it looks awful cute, and nobody really knew it was about five sizes too small for him :D

Rora got to be the cutest oompa loompa around.

Last year we made it about two houses before Gavin wore out.

This year was a little different...Common, sister, let's GOOOOOOOooooo!

Birthday to my favorite four year old! Today Gavin said "Is it Oct-O-ber 30?"
"Ohhhhh! Oh boy! I *like* being four!"
We started the day with a pancakes filled with love.

Then went with Daddy to change tires, since winter is just around the corner, and over to Grandma and Pa's for naps while Mommy and Daddy did their magic. The special dinner request was for "meat, *new* rice, and chicken" so we had chicken and Rice-A-Roni. Then opened presents and had cake.

He was very excited about his trucks, especially the garbage truck! Mommy was very excited about the fish...

Which I just knew would be a big hit!

There are two zebra fish - one stripped and one neon orange, a glass shrimp, and a frog. How much better could it get!

Fall has arrived. Rain, wind, more rain, and more wind today! It was Juneau's Get Out and Play day and we braved the weather to go check out the free Toddler Open Gym (haha) once we got there, it was obvious everybody else was trying to get out of the weather, too. There had to have been hundreds of kids! Gavin had fun despite the crowds and Rora, who hasn't been feeling very good, slept through the whole thing. (Thank goodness for ear tubes. I am convinced we would have another ear infection by now if it weren't for them!)

Then in the afternoon, we really did brave the weather to go to the trucks n stuff, where the kids could climb on and in a bunch of different large equipment vehicles. A city bus, dump truck, excavator, tractor. You get the idea. My camera battery died so I didn't get any pictures. I know. Bad Mommy...

I think it's probably safe to say, it's her favorite food. Although she also loves anything tomato, and all kinds of yummy fruit. Yogurt has to be her favorite fall back. I ♥ preschool! The class went to the Glacier today. We saw a beaver dam & lodge, some dead fish (that one was a huge hit with the three year olds!) a porcupine, some iceburgs, swallow nests, and even some sun. But it was cold. Even wearing Rora (which is kinda like putting a 98* heater in your coat) it was chilly, but the kids were troopers. Preschool is so much fun. :D

Too bad Gavin didn't really like them! It was kind of funny, he was so psyched about it and kept asking for the marshmallows. Then when we finally got to them, he tried one and then wouldn't finish it. But we had fun anyway. There's just nothing else like a fire, hot dogs, and marshmallows at the beach. So much fun! I can't wait to go camping with them next summer.

We are rewriting this chapter in our lives, and it's going to be a good one! After a rocky start at the wrong place, I am happy to announce that Gavin is officially a preschooler! He is in a wonderful co-op preschool where he is going to grow and thrive. He absolutely loves it there and today was his first day on his own. He could have cared less when I left, he was busy racing a horse.

No really. I'm certain that summer really is over, this time for real. It's September, after all. Labor Day for pete's sake. Beautiful, sunny, and....HOT! :o

We enjoyed the sun at Kowee Creek where Gavin and Daddy went fishing.

Well Daddy went fishing and Gavin reeled up a hookless lure. Shhhhh.

Aurora supervised from a safe distance.

Until she decided to slide down the river bank on her belly...

So we packed up and had a picnic at Sunshine Cove instead.

Gavin and Daddy built a sand castle,

After many trips to the water to moisten the sand.

But the best part was smashing it with a big rock before we left ;)

We had a great time in the sun and after naps went to an RDI BBQ downtown and played in the park for hours while enjoying salmon, halibut, brats, and good company! A perfect holiday and a smashing end to summer.

Where the weekend went!!!

We did do the Home Depot kid's workshop, have an impromptu play date with Aiden, walked to the playground, did our weekly shopping, had a movie night, went swimming, and cleaned out the pantry.

This may have been the best workshop yet! Although by the time I got around to taking pictures, he was more interested in the cookie than the helicopter, and especially not interested in posing for the camera.

I got to take an extra day off this weekend since Grandma and Pa went to Anchorage without us, much to (my and) Gavin's dismay. We ended up at Castle Park and just as I was pulling in, Gavin started talking about playing with Cousin, so on a whim, I gave her a call and we ended up enjoying one more visit with her. And luckily for us, the sun managed to come out for a few minutes in one last little taste of summer before monsoon season sets in for good ;)

Another year, a fresh start

I've been blogging for almost a year now. That is, if you count the last two months when I haven't been blogging at all. Sorry folks. I had so much to share and kept meaning to catch up but it's been so busy and I've barely had a chance to breathe!

It's been non-stop around here - we have to take advantage of the daylight while we can! August was filled with fishing, flying, friends, and family. Aurora went on her first boat ride ever.

Gavin drove the boat himself and went on his very first fishing trip. I was up north to get Aurora tubes in her ears and got to catch up with friends and fam in Anchorage, and was secretly, selfishly glad to hear that he didn't actually reel in a fish on his first trip since I wasn't along to witness (and document ;) the ordeal. Pa got to go and they did boat two nice coho that are awful tasty smoked!

While I was gone, Pa and Gavin went on a whale watch which is still talked about daily! and after I got home I made a point to go do something special with just Gavin and now every time we do something without Sister, Gavin asks me excitedly "is *this* a Mommy-date?" I caught the biggest and my first salmon of the year. And little miss started walking full-time and is getting awful fast and brave! Busy, busy, busy!!!

4th

We spent the fourth biking across the bridge, although we didn't exactly mean to. We were going to try to get to Golden Gate Park on our rental bikes, but due to construction and bad map-reading, we ended up at the base of the bridge and decided since we were there, we may as well go. Dean had the kids in a trailer that probably weighed as much as they did before we put them in it, but somehow he managed to get across with them past the 30 MPH winds.

I think the kids slept or nearly slept most of the time. It was a little crazy at first, Gavin kept trying to wake up his sister, but after a few stops and runs in the grass, things went pretty smoothly. It was a beautiful day but the bridge was still shrouded in fog, of course!

On the bridge

Under a tower. The winds were especially strong going around these. At one point they stopped me coming around a corner. I'm still not sure how Dean got by with the trailer and kids. Go Dean!

Once we got across it was a little crazy too. We didn't notice the big signs saying that one of the routes to Sausilito was closed so we took off under the bridge and ended up walking the bikes back up so that we could go over and then back down again. Some of the corners were sketchy, especially when the big tour buses went by on a little two lane road with us on the side in the bike lane. But we made it! And took a ferry back to the Pier. Along the way the ferry paused and circled some poor people who had overturned their sailboat in the bay. They were fine and the ferry finally left when another (bigger ;) sailboat approached to help. I couldn't figure out why everybody kept looking at us on the way back to the bike rental but I think it was the two cute tired kids each laying on one side of the trailer...we had a late lunch, took a nap and headed down to the park below Ghirardelli square to watch the fireworks.

You can't really tell in the photo, but the "G" in Ghirardelli had stars and stripes on it. Cute. Aurora dug the live band and danced most of the time.

Gavin was a little more subdued (read: tired) and spent most of the evening snuggled with Daddy waiting for the fireworks to begin. They were amazing of course, and it was nice to watch them at a decent hour, since it got dark at a much more reasonable time...A perfect holiday filled with all kinds of adventures!

Exploratorium

We had fun on Saturday checking out the exploratorium. It was hard to take photographs because it was so dark and badly lit, but Gavin (and Daddy ;) had a great time running around checking things out.

I think the favorite of the day was the miniature steam engine. Both Daddy and Gavin played there for a long time. The place was huge and even tho we spent a couple hours there, we barely saw a portion of their exhibits. Crazy!
We had a picnic lunch outside in the grass and walked around in the park enjoying the sun.

10 glorious days! We played tourist in San Francisco for a while. After living in a tourist town (and quite a few years in the industry too :) it was our turn for once! Our first day was sunny and hot and we wandered down to the Pier and took a one hour ferry tour.

I had read that many of the sea lions have moved up the coast closer to the Oregon caves, but there were still some there! Gavin loved hearing them bark.

That would be me...but only on the blogging front. It's summer in Juneau, and it's been nice to boot, which means we've been on a dead run for what seems like forever. There is no end in sight, especially with vacation coming up! Can you say yay! But the exciting news for the Baker babes is that Aurora took her first few steps. Grandma called me all excited to tell me she walked from her to Pa and back again. When I got off work we enticed her to do it again, but she has yet to prove to Daddy that it's true...soon she will be off and running :)

I stayed home with the kids (yay! 4 day weekend) on Friday so I could spend Aurora's birthday with her. It was sunny and beautiful. We went to the park and played in the sun until Daddy's lunch hour, when we went and enjoyed lunch with him. Then off to the store so Gavin could pick out a present for her. He got her (finally, after being torn away from the cars and trucks) a baby choo-choo. A perfect gift from an older brother. Much needed naps (I got a present from her, both babies asleep at the same time!) and then a nice BBQ and baths and bed! Pretty normal day but tons of fun and I'm so grateful to be able to spend it with her and her brother.

And boy did she enjoy the corn. She's had it before but never done much with it. She chowED down and ate almost the whole cob all by herself!

You may have noticed its presence in most of my outdoor photos the past few months. If it wasn't in the photo, it was probably because I made him take it off momentarily in an attempt to get a better picture of his face. But it always goes right back on. He won't wear any other hat. And he *has* to wear a hat every time we leave the house. Now, we do live in Alaska. But common. It's almost June for goodness sake! Oh well. It's a cute hat. And he wears it well. Sunshine! It's been beautiful out lately. Finally feels like spring. We have been enjoying it while we can. This weekend we gave the cars their first spring scrub. Well, Daddy and Gavin did anyway :)

But today Daddy & Gavin built a snowman in the backyard. We didn't get the 12 inches the NWS was calling for yesterday but enough to cover the ground before it started raining again today.

to the weekend?!? I swear I was going to get on here and post all kinds of fun stuff....but apparently, we were too busy having fun :) Or at least, enjoying the weekend. She really is growing up too fast. She is a signing fool and even has a few words. I had a dream she signed water last night, but really, so far, it's just "milk" "more" and "all done" but she also shakes her head no at appropriate times, and doesn't hesitate to let you know when she doesn't get her way. One smart cookie!

At our house, it is E.A.R.I.N.F.E.C.T.I.O.N! It's been a long week, but the antibiotics have finally kicked in and she is feeling better tonight. We managed to get outside a couple of times, but most of our evenings have been spent trying to console her and keep her fevers down. No.fun.at.all. Here's hoping for a happier weekend!

Sun, Sand, Slides, Spring & Snow

It's been a busy week, and felt an awful like spring, with quite unseasonably warm and sunny weather. Gavin, Aurora and I have been enjoying playing in the sun. We went to the Glacier on Monday and wandered around while the rest of Juneau was socked in with fog, where we even found some pussy willows, a sure sign of spring :)

On Wednesday, Gavin had so much fun playing in the sand and mud, it almost made me want to get down and dirty too. Almost.

Thursday was typically rainy and wet so we stayed inside most of the day, but yesterday we spent the morning with Abbey, Corder, and Thalen out at Skater's cabin where the three year olds had a hay day in the dirt (I forgot my camera, so no pics of the two of them together unfortunately). It was an inspiration to us to go back today but instead of playing in the sand, today we got to play in the snow, since it was coming down in droves. I swear, some of the flakes were bigger than Gavin's hands...

It didn't stick around much (thankfully...) but was fun while it lasted!

Is busy! And fun! I'll be back to blog more and post photos, but I am super excited about Aurora's new skill. She has started kissing. Only one person so far has gotten lucky with her...but he's gotten at least three kisses already. Everyone be jealous of Gavin!

I went in to kiss Gavin on my way to bed last night, and he stirred, rolled over a little and said to me in the cutest, sleepiest little voice,

"Almost Done Mommy.....Almost Done"

"Okay" I whispered, as I brushed aside his (admittedly way too long) hair. He rolled the rest of the way over and said,

"Almost Cleaned Up"

I tried to ask him what we were going to do when he finished cleaning up, but he was out again. I'm sure it was something terribly fun and exciting ;)

He sang as he mixed the cookie dough tonight after dinner. It was nice to spend some time with him while the teething, cranky, snotty, feverish, working on three more teeth, miserable ball of snot that is his sister laid on her daddy's lap instead of mine where she has taken up semi-permanent residence. Maybe next time I have two free hands I'll even have time to download some pictures...

Gavin had a doctor's appointment on Friday so we dropped Aurora off with Pa and spent the morning together. On the way to the clinic, we stopped at the river to walk with Corder, Abbey, and Thalen. They actually took off ahead of us and caught us on their way back. Gavin and I enjoyed the sun together. It was nice to spend some time alone with my sweet baby boy :)

Castle Park

It's been warm and dry lately, so earlier this week I took the kids to Castle Park for the morning. It was pretty nice. We bundled up but it was not too cold, not too busy, and tons of fun. Gavin is finally big enough to make use of most of the play area and we had a great time exploring areas of the castle he has never really seen before. I know this photo is pretty dark but his expression is priceless!

This little lady is just growing up waaay too fast. She signed "milk" at me yesterday and started waving today (Pa, of course, got the first one of those. I think it was his Grandpa the Legend shirt!) She is crawling like a pro and pulling up on *everything* She has even learned how to get back down without help most of the time ;) and I saw her contemplating a little cruising today. She even fits in her very first pair of blue jeans, which I have to say are simply the cutest things ever! Or maybe it's just the model...

Yesterday we made cookies with Gavin. It was tons of fun on an otherwise tough kind of Sunday. Aurora wasn't feeling well and Gavin...well....wasn't helping her feel much better...but we made it through and before dinner we rolled out some dough and decorated some yummy cookies.
